I am an ESRC Postdoctoral Fellow, funded by the White Rose Doctoral Training Partnership, based in the Department of Language & Linguistic Science at the University of York.
My current research focus is exploring safe, fair and scientifically-informed ways of incorporating automatic speech recognition technology into the transcription of police interviews.
My research interests include:
- Forensic transcription
- Automatic speech recognition
- Post-editing of automatic speech recognition transcripts
- Sociophonetic variation
- Regulatory requirements & method validation
In 2024, I was awarded a PhD in Linguistics (Forensic Speech Science) by the University of York. My doctoral research investigated the production of transcripts within the criminal justice system, with a particular focus on the methods employed to produce transcripts of poor quality evidential recordings and police-suspect interview recordings. My research also explored the ways in which the content of transcripts, produced by both humans and automatic systems, is affected by audio quality and regional accent.
